Lisbon Advantage: Havertz Strikes in the Alvalade

In the high-pressure environment of a Champions League quarter-final, we produced exactly the kind of response Mikel Arteta would have demanded following our FA Cup exit just days ago. A 1-0 victory over Sporting CP at the Estádio José Alvalade gives us a crucial advantage heading into the second leg at the Emirates.

The match was a tactical chess game from the start. Sporting, roared on by a passionate home crowd, looked to catch us on the break, but William Saliba and Gabriel were back to their imperious best. The breakthrough came in the 52nd minute. Martin Ødegaard found space on the right and delivered a signature whipped cross that Kai Havertz met with a powerful header, steering it into the far corner.

Mikel Arteta: "I'm extremely proud of the maturity we showed. To come here and keep a clean sheet against a team of Sporting's quality is a big statement. Kai was outstanding again—he always turns up in these big European nights."

The remainder of the game was a masterclass in game management. Declan Rice and Thomas Partey (back in the side for his experience) controlled the midfield, limiting Sporting's chances to long-range efforts that David Raya handled with ease.

We had chances to double our lead on the counter, with Gabriel Martinelli going close late on, but 1-0 is a result we would have bitten your hand off for before kick-off. One step closer to the semi-finals!

Man of the Match: William Saliba. He was a wall at the back, winning every aerial duel and reading the game with veteran-like composure.
