Cup Dreams Dashed: Shocker at St Mary's

Football can be a cruel game. On a night where we hoped to book our place in the FA Cup semi-finals, we instead witnessed a major upset as Championship side Southampton defeated us 2-1 at St Mary's Stadium. The Saints, wearing a special commemorative kit, played with a hunger that we simply couldn't match in key moments.

The first half was a struggle for rhythm. Despite controlling possession, we fell behind in the 35th minute. Ross Stewart took advantage of a defensive lapse from Ben White to fire past Kepa, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. We lacked the usual snap in our passing, looking every bit a team feeling the weight of a heavy fixture list.

Mikel Arteta: "We didn't start with the right intensity. In the cup, if you give teams a sniff, they will take it. We have to be better in both boxes."

The second half saw an improved performance, and when Viktor Gyökeres clinicaly finished from close range in the 68th minute after a great ball from Kai Havertz, it felt like we would go on to win it. We camped in their half, creating chance after chance, but Janis Blaswich (who seems to have a career-best performance against us every time!) was an impenetrable wall.

Then came the sucker punch. In the 85th minute, with us pushing for a winner, Southampton hit us on a clinical counter-attack. Shea Charles fired a low shot into the corner to end our FA Cup journey and our 14-match unbeaten away run.

It’s a bitter pill to swallow, especially coming so soon after the Carabao Cup final defeat. We have to pick ourselves up quickly, as the Premier League title race is still very much alive.

Man of the Match: Viktor Gyökeres. He was the only real bright spark in attack and took his goal with the composure of a world-class striker.
