A Proper Cup Tie: Surviving the Mansfield Scare

The magic of the FA Cup was on full display at the One Call Stadium. Fresh off knocking out Premier League opposition in the previous round, Mansfield Town proved to be a formidable test for a heavily rotated Arsenal side.

Youth and Experience

Mikel Arteta made nine changes for this fifth-round tie, providing valuable minutes to the squad and even handing starts to two 16-year-old academy prospects. The gamble initially seemed to pay off when Noni Madueke continued his prolific cup form, scoring a well-taken goal in the first half. Notably, this was Arsenal's 100th goal across all competitions this season!

The Mansfield Push

Mansfield refused to roll over. Capitalizing on the electric home atmosphere, they registered 11 shots in the first half alone. Their persistence paid off early in the second half when Will Evans seized on a defensive lapse to equalize, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

Eze Off The Bench

Recognizing the danger of an upset, Arteta turned to his bench. Eberechi Eze was introduced and once again provided the decisive spark, firing Arsenal back into the lead and eventually securing our spot in the last eight.

"They made it a proper FA Cup game. Full credit to Mansfield, their effort and their fans were incredible. Sometimes you just have to survive and advance," Arteta admitted after the whistle.

A tough test navigated. The quadruple dream is still alive!
