With Manchester City dropping points to West Ham earlier in the weekend, the stakes were incredibly high at the Emirates. A win against Everton would extend our lead at the top to nine points.
Frustration at the Emirates
For 88 minutes, it felt like an incredibly frustrating afternoon. Despite registering 25 attempts on goal—our highest in any Premier League match this season—we simply could not break down a resolute Everton side. The Toffees were dangerous on the counter too, with David Raya forced into a brilliant save against Beto, and Dwight McNeil striking the post.
The Breakthrough
As the clock ticked down, the tension was palpable. Enter Viktor Gyökeres. In the 89th minute, the powerful striker finally found a way through, finishing from close range after a great assist from Piero Hincapié. The relief inside the stadium was immense.
History Made
The drama wasn't over. In the seventh minute of stoppage time, Everton sent goalkeeper Jordan Pickford forward for a desperate corner. The ball was cleared, sparking a counter-attack toward an empty net. 16-year-old academy product Max Dowman, recently brought off the bench, raced clear to tap it home.
In doing so, Dowman became the youngest-ever goalscorer in Premier League history at just 16 years and 73 days old!
"It’s a pivotal moment for our season. The patience the boys showed, and then for Max to create history... it’s an unbelievable day for the club," an ecstatic Mikel Arteta declared.
Nine points clear at the top. The momentum is firmly with the Arsenal.
