A Point in Munich, and a Worry About Saka

Bayern Munich 2-2 Arsenal · Champions League, league phase · Allianz Arena · 21 October 2026

Fourteen straight wins in the league phase, the second longest run in the competition's history behind Bayern themselves, and it ended in the Allianz. A draw here is a good night. It did not feel like one by the end, and that had nothing to do with the scoreline.

Saka Off After Ten Minutes

He went down making a pass. No contact, nobody near him, which is always the worst way to see it. Eberechi Eze came on in the tenth minute and the whole shape of the evening changed before it had started.

The Game Itself

Eze scored fifteen minutes after coming on, finishing an Ødegaard pass on 25 with his left foot. Alphonso Davies levelled it on 35 from a Kane assist, and Harry Kane put Bayern ahead from the penalty spot on 61.

Declan Rice made it 2-2 on 82. Bayern were without Michael Olise through suspension, Jamal Musiala injured and Luis Díaz on the bench, so this was not the full force of them, but coming back twice in that stadium is still worth something.

Arteta on Both Things

On the game:

"Wow, what a game."

"Bayern batter every team, so I really value what the boys did tonight."

And then the part that mattered more:

"It does not look good at all. It's his quad."

"They are a bit concerned."

A scan was due in the days after. For anyone who has watched Saka's last few seasons, "quad" and "the medics are concerned" in the same answer is not a sentence you want to hear.

Where That Leaves Us

Seven points from three in the league phase, and the run is over. The bigger cost is the one that will not show up in the table.

Everton at home on Saturday.

Man of the Match: Declan Rice 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

He got the goal that saved the point, and he was the one carrying the midfield once the game had been reorganised around Saka's absence.
